News from Haiti

A small group from New Horizon's Team Haiti is just back back from Haiti on 3/22,  we found that the devastation in and around Port Au Prince is tremendous and massive and hard to describe.  So many buildings down or damaged and people living where ever they can, including in between lanes on busy, polluted streets.  Almost everyone we know or worked with in the past lost their homes.  Some of them have been able to cobble shelter together but most will disintegrate when the rains and wind start up.  We did find that food and supplies were fairly plentiful if you can afford to buy them.  We also found the atmosphere to be calm and security didn't seem to be an issue.  We were very careful but never felt threatened in any way, despite clearly being outsiders.  The Haitian people have an amazing capacity to absorb suffering without being lawless and freaking out like other cultures do as they go into survival mode. In Thor, the school is standing and only had one upper floor wall that was damaged and needed to come down.  This was in progress after a brief discussion on the second day.  By the third day, they were rebuilding it and had plans for reinforcement.  The Church is essentially undamaged and is being used as a shelter for many people.

We had amazing reunions with so many people in the neighborhood and made new friends, too. Here is a brief list of some of the things that we were able to get done while there.-distributed over 23,000 meals worth of rice and beans, delivered 3.5 20 gallon tubs full of energy bars, gave out 13 tents and 10 tarps, saw over 100 patients at a makeshift clinic in the church (our nurse, Kim was joined by a local Haitian lady who is a nurse and lived in NY for many years-a key meeting that was no accident!), built 1 stud and tarp home (like the Samaritans purse ones you might have seen), gave out countless other things from flashlights to more adventureland blankets, discussed and left cash for rebuilding damage and finishing second floor so the kids can start learning up there come April, witnessed and ministered to countless folks and saw people come to the Lord as well as built and solidified meaningful relationships that give hope to those who needed it.  This was only possible because of God, the prayers and support of you back home and for all of the donations that poured in-Thank You!
