Garden Hills School

New Horizon has helped support Garden Hills Elementary School in Champaign for the last 3 school years. Garden Hills School has one of the highest number of children on free and reduced price lunch in the district and they always have many places that they can use volunteers. We strive to fill in at the school in some of the ways that parents help at school. We have volunteer opportunities with every level of commitment.

Some of the ways we can help include:

  • Prayer support– pray regularly and for special events in the life of the school
  • Library help–shelve books, help with check out
  • Classroom help– tutor a small group in class, grade papers, copy, do special projects for a teacher
  • Recess help–monitor indoor and/or outdoor activities
  • Lunchroom help– help open milk, carry trays
  • Mentoring– meet with a student for 1 hour a week to play a game and visit
  • Adopt a classroom for parties– provide treats and plan a game for
  • Classroom parties (this could be a small group project)
  • Bake for parties– provide treats for a classroom party
  • Bake for teachers– bake homemade treats for teacher appreciation and the start of school
  • Collect General Mills Box Tops for Education– cut them off of participating cereal and other foodproducts and drop them in the collection bin at the Welcome Center
  • Transport or pack food for “Backpack Buddies”

Other ways we have helped at Garden Hills in the past include:

  • Collected school supplies and backpacks
  • Collected gently used books to give as prizes
  • Participated in a U of I study to earn money for the PTA
